That Perfect Shot

NICOLE VAN CUYLENBURG susses out all the handy tricks and insider tips to getting picture-perfect memories.

STRIKE A POSE
For those of us not blessed with a slim waist, here’s how to get one. Place one hand on your hip and straighten upper torso. This creates a space between the elbow and the hip, which gives the illusion of an hourglass figure.

You should also have your chest out, tummy in, shoulders rolled back. But relax your shoulders so you don’t look like you’re about to burst.

Pro tip: Make sure your photographer doesn’t stand too close to you and shoot from a low angle with a wide-angle lens, cautions Lance Lee of 99 Brides, as this makes you look heavier.
A good photographer also looks out for small, crucial details, says Eugene Goh of Chris Ling photography. “A badly-placed hand or clenched fingers spoils a good photo.”

BEST FACE FORWARD
Want your face to look slim and elegant? Try sticking out your neck and chin. This separates the face from the neck and makes the face look slimmer and the neck longer. Facing the right direction and good lighting also helps.

Pro tip: Ken Teo of Colour Dots suggests kissing shots or locking gaze shots, which naturally force you to stick out your neck and chin.

BASK IN THE LIGHT
Many photographers agree that the best times to get great pictures are between 7am and 9am, and between 4pm and 7pm. “Sunlight falls at more flattering angles during these times, so you’ll look more radiant,” says Lance.

Pro tip: No outdoor pictures between 11am and 4pm. “Light during this time is harsh; it also makes most people squint, affecting your photos. You’ll also end up looking pasty and washed out,” says Eugene.

NO RAIN ON YOUR PARADE
A Plan B with your photographer is crucial, especially if the weather turns bad. Pose by a window and make use of the diffused light, says Eugene. You can get remarkably moody shots that smack of romance.
